Dead Space

Dead Space is an action game with grotesque imagery, rather than a survivor horror game.  Although the monsters in Dead Space are quite lethal, they tend to be more annoying than scary.  Most of the horror elements in Dead Space come from the grotesque scenes that the player comes across and the overdone, ambient noises that sound like tension building music and end up being the ship’s naturally creepy sounds, more often than not ventilation related.  The monsters are easily dispatched by the game’s starter weapon, which is a gun that can cut horizontally or vertically in order to remove limbs from the monsters.  However the limb removal isn’t that big of an issue in combat.  Rather than effecting the way fights are handled it changes where the player aims.  Shooting off a limb is the equivalent of a head shot in Dead Space.  Other things Dead Space adds to game play are zero gravity rooms which require the player to aim and press Y to change the surface the player walks on and vacuum areas which requires the player to act fast because of the limited amount of oxygen the player is given.  For the most part all of the new elements in Dead Space can be handled easily, reverting the game into a repetitive corridor shooter.  The story is what you’d expect from an action movie which hurts the game’s lasting appeal and gives the player no motivation to continue playing.

The game also has a inventory system that slows the action down and makes the game easier to handle, removing what little difficulty remained.

Dead Space is a rental at best.  The story isn’t compelling enough to draw the player in and the game play becomes repetitive early on with no real change in the dynamic of the game’s challenge.  For the most part Dead Space is a corridor shooter where you stumble upon scenes of fucked up shit.
